A young Wyoming woman was so tortured by the opening of an abortion clinic in her state that she took matters into her own hands. Now, she’ll pay for her righteousness with a hefty prison sentence. Here is the full story.
Not Many Options
In the entire sprawling and conservative state of Wyoming, there was only one abortion clinic as the summer of 2022 dawned.
And even there, the so-called “abortion pill” was the only option available to women.
Winds of Change
All of that was set to change in June of 2022, though.
Not Just Abortions
Wellspring Health Access was scheduled to become the state’s first full-service abortion clinic in many years.
And it wasn’t all about abortions, either.
Hope for Many
Wellspring was also planning to offer gender-affirming care and more general OB GYN services.
An Exciting Time
The new clinic made news all around the state and was the topic of much debate, but also much hope for women and supporters of reproductive healthcare.
Impending Doom
For Lorna Green, though, Wellspring opened up a sense of impending doom.
Nightmares and Despair
Green, a staunch pro-lifer, has said the prospect of the new clinic caused her to have nightmares and sent her into a spiral of despair.
She Had to Act
So, a month before the clinic was set to open, Green decided to take matters into her own hands.
A Soul on Fire
Early on the morning of May 25, 2022, in the dead of night, Green smashed a rock through a window at the clinic.
Then she went inside, doused the place with gasoline, and set it ablaze.
Caught in the Act
Video evidence caught Green’s face on camera when she lowered the surgical mask she had been wearing.
Another camera caught her vehicle leaving the parking lot.
Long Investigation
And, although it took months for investigators to get a positive identification from the video evidence, it eventually sealed her fate.
Instagram Gave Her Up
Finally, after offering up $15,000 in reward money, investigators got the tips they needed.
They were able to match clothes Green was wearing in posts on her own Instagram account to those the perp wore in the clinic videos.
She Couldn’t Deny It
Green was arrested in March of 2023 and, facing a mountain of evidence against her, she pled guilty to federal arson charges this summer.
Now She Has to Pay
Back in court in late September, Green finally learned her fate: 5 years in prison, 3 years of probation, and fines that could approach $300,000.
Could Have Been Worse
It’s a rough start to adult life for a 22-year-old woman, but Green’s punishment could have been much worse.
Both Sides Agreed
Both prosecutors and her defense lawyers argued for Green to receive the mandatory minimum sentence.
But Judge Alan B. Johnson could have slapped her with up to 20 years in prison.
Judge Blamed Her Parents
Instead, Johnson stuck with the minimum, citing physical and emotional abuse as a child as contributing factors to her actions.
Think It but Don’t Do It
In passing judgment, Johnson said that Green is entitled to her opinions, but that she’s not entitled to wreak destruction in support of those viewpoints.
Ready to Pay Up
Green’s lawyer said the young woman regretted her actions immediately after setting the fire and is ready to pay her debt and move on with her life.
Moving On
She’ll have to wait a few years to get that chance. In the meantime, Wellspring made a triumphant comeback despite Green’s crimes and opened this summer, about a year behind schedule.
