In London, a weekly dating event has ignited a heated debate on inclusivity, gender identity, and the preservation of safe spaces. Here’s what happened.

A lesbian speed-dating event, hosted by Jenny Watson, has become embroiled in a transphobia row.
A Cherished Gathering for Lesbians
The event, priced at £15 per person, was a beloved gathering for lesbian women seeking to connect with like-minded individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.
Trans Women Were Interested in the Event
However, tensions began to simmer when trans women expressed an interest in participating.
Adult Human Females
Watson, a 31-year-old town planner and the event’s organizer responded by stating that only “adult human females” could attend the event.
An Uncomfortable Situation
Last week, Watson took to her website to lay down her rules.
Watson’s decision was not random but was borne out of concerns raised by attendees who felt uncomfortable when Trans women attempted to join the event.
Watson told the media, “Last year, a person turned up sporting a purple latex outfit… and an erection.”
A Trans Woman Pushed Their Body
“Another time, a trans woman came into the female toilet and pushed their body at a woman who was upset and told me after. It got me thinking that this isn’t fair on women,” she added.
Don’t Come if You’re Not a Lesbian
“If you are male, please refrain from coming to the events, you are not a lesbian,” she wrote, underlining her stance on preserving the unique identity of lesbian women.
Deserve Respect
Watson added, “Transgender individuals deserve respect. But there is a need for protection of sex-segregated spaces for lesbian women.”
The Complaint
Watson’s intentions, however, were not universally appreciated.
An activist group lodged a complaint against her with her employers, accusing her of transphobia and discrimination.
Harmful Stereotypes
They contended that her insistence on the phrase “adult human females” and her statement that “lesbians don’t have penises” were exclusionary and perpetuate harmful stereotypes.
An Inquiry Was Launched
As the controversy escalated, an inquiry was launched by the Stonegate Group, the proprietors of the College Arms pub where the speed-dating event took place.
Rules Under Review
The inquiry aimed to provide clarity on whether Watson’s rules were discriminatory or if they were grounded in a legitimate need for maintaining safe and comfortable spaces for lesbian women.
Social Media Users Shared Their Views
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “They have no one to blame but themselves. The LGBs have preached tolerance and acceptance most of my life. They begged for their unholy unions to be called marriage. They made their beds, now they can lie in it.”
