A North Carolina community has become the center of online outrage after announcing a measure that requires all potential residents to display the United States flag in front of their properties. Here’s the full story.
The Neighborhood
The Gastonia-based neighborhood, aptly named 1776 Gastonia, recently completed its subdivision planning for made-to-order homes, and these properties will be available for purchase in the coming months.
The Flags Were Important
The driving force behind this unique requirement is Brock Fankhauser, the owner, and founder of Great American Homes, who sees the American flag as an integral part of the community’s architecture.
It’s Similar to a Fixture
Fankhauser explains, “We’re handling the American flag like an architectural element. We are installing it similarly to a fixture.”
Each Homeowner Will Be Given a Flag
According to Fankhauser, each homeowner will receive an American flag upon moving into their new home, and they will have previously agreed to a contract mandating its display at the front of their residences at all times.
Politics Is Not Involved
Importantly, this requirement is not tied to any specific political party, as Fankhauser emphasizes the community’s commitment to being non-partisan.
They Are Completely Detached From It
He said, “I’ve also said it’s very important for us to distance ourselves from any political movement, any political party, and any political figures. We are completely detached from that.”
This Is Not for Everyone
Fankhauser made it clear that while 1776 Gastonia may not be for everyone, all potential homebuyers will be fully informed about the Homeowners Association (HOA) requirements before making any commitment.
People Will Know Upfront
“Those that agree with what we’re doing will know it upfront,” he asserts, “Those that may not agree with it will know about it upfront, and it will come as a secret to nobody.”
This Is Not Uncommon
In response to concerns that this flag display might be viewed as a divisive political statement, Fankhauser pointed out that themed communities are not uncommon, especially for those aged 55 and over, in the Carolinas.
