A young woman riled up Redditors when she told on her parents for stealing her college fund. Now the whole family is blowing up over the situation. Here is the full story.
She Has Big Plans
OP is a 19-year-old girl getting ready to start college.
Her plan is to begin at a community college and then transfer later on.
An Amazing Gift
When OP was 16, her stepdad’s aunt gave her $5000 to help cover her college costs.
It was an amazing gift, and OP was very grateful.
She Was Counting on It
And since she knew the money was in the bank and waiting for her, OP was also counting on having those funds available.
He Was in Control
The problem from the very beginning was that OP’s stepdad deposited it in his own account.
He said she could have it when she was 18.
She Understood His Reasons
That made OP a little uneasy, but she understood his reasoning and knew that teens tended to burn through money when they got a big chunk.
She Trusted Him
Besides, even though OP’s mom was pretty impulsive with money, she thought her stepdad was more level-headed.
The Money Was Gone
But about a month before she started school, OP found out that all the money was gone.
He Bailed Out Mom
As it turned out, OP’s stepdad used the money to make her mom’s car payment for a few months.
He also chipped in some of it for their mortgage payments.
She Blamed COVID
OP was shocked and angry, but when she confronted her mom, the older woman had an explanation.
She said that the pandemic had trashed the family finances, and she didn’t have a choice.
She Was Uncertain
Even though OP is usually very forceful and confident in her interactions with her mom and everyone else, she wasn’t sure what to think about this situation.
She Had a Point
During the course of their conversation, OP’s mom showed her how much her car payment was.
It was not cheap, and it was easy to see why mom needed extra money during the pandemic.
She Wanted to Think About It
So OP decided not to blow up in the moment and chew on the new information for a while.
She Tattled on Them
Not long after that, though, OP was visiting with her grandmother and mentioned that her college money was gone.
Granny Spilled the Beans
When she heard that news, OP’s grandmother was furious and told the girl some more information that she didn’t know about her parents.
She Was a Reckless Spender
In particular, OP’s grandmother told her that her mother had blown through her COVID stimulus money by buying a bunch of silly luxury items.
She Was Suspicious
Not only that, but OP’s grandmother was suspicious about how her stepdad could have gotten his hands on her money in the first place.
He Shouldn’t Have Had Access
The grandmother knew for a fact that the aunt had made out the check to OP herself, so the stepdad shouldn’t have been able to cash it without OP signing off on it.
She Wanted Her to Snitch
OP’s grandmother was also pretty sure the rest of the family had no idea that the girl’s parents had stolen her money.
She encouraged her granddaughter to tell her aunt about the situation.
She Didn’t Want to Blow It Up
OP was torn about that advice. She knew her parents had wronged her, but she didn’t really want to blow up the family.
She Wants Payback
So as a first step, OP went back to her parents and told them she expected them to pay her back.
And she expected those payments to start immediately.
She Threatened Them
OP also threatened to go to her aunt and out them to the rest of the family if they don’t follow through.
Will They Follow Through?
OP’s parents agreed to those terms, so for now, she’s waiting to see if they can deliver on their promises.
She Has Her Doubts
But OP is uneasy about the whole situation and fears she’ll end up in debt and with a completely broken family.
She’s Being Way Too Soft on Them
Redditors think OP is going way too easy on her parents. They say that her folks outright stole from her and need to pay up immediately.
Some commenters think OP should tell the rest of the family about the situation right now. Others even think she should go to the police since her parents stole from her.
