President Biden said on Sunday during his visit to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, that he was not on vacation and has no home to go to for the time being, after a report claimed he’s spent 40% of his presidency away from the Whitehouse.
Not on Vacation
Biden approached reporters after leaving Mass at St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church and, unprompted, revealed his weekend trip was not for vacation purposes.
The president, who has two homes in Delaware, lives at the White House but spends most of his weekends in Delaware.
No Home to Go to
“I have no home to go to,” Biden told the reporters.
More Secure Home
The president said the Secret Service has been working on his primary residence in Wilmington, Delaware, to make it more secure “in a good way.”
He has not spent a night in Wilmington in months.
Day Trip to the Beach
“So I have no place to go when I come to Delaware, except here, right now,” he said, referring to his home in Rehoboth Beach. “I’m only here for one day.”
Weeks and Weekends Away
The First Family spent a week on vacation in Nevada’s Lake Tahoe region two weeks ago. The Republican National Committee and GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill have regularly criticized Biden for his weekend trips away from the White House.
Homeless?
The reporters who ran into the president on Sunday asked if he was claiming to be homeless.
Not Homeless
“No, I’m not homeless,” he responded. “I just have one home. I have a beautiful home. I’m down here for the day because I can’t go home home.”
Slacker-in-Chief
This comes just days after Biden was slammed for taking 40% off his time in office “on vacation”
382 Days Away From 957 in Office
Biden’s weekend jaunts and vacations spanned 382 days — with seven in 10 of them spent at his homes in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware — out of 957 days in office.
Where Has He Been?
The president’s “vacation” days include 100 of the 135 weekends since his inauguration spent secluded in one of his two Delaware homes, at Camp David in Maryland, or in the homes of rich friends.
Trump Only on Vacay 26%
Biden’s 40% out-of-office ratio is far higher than that of former President Donald Trump, who spent 26% of his presidency on personal trips out of Washington — 381 of his 1,461 days in office.
Obama, Reagan and Carter Noses to the Grindstone
In contrast, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan vacationed for just 11% of their two-term presidencies and Jimmy Carter took only 79 days’ worth of breaks, accounting for 5% of his term in office.

RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said “Voters want Republicans, who actually show up to work, to dig America out of Biden’s recession, secure the southern border, and put an end to reckless spending of taxpayer dollars,”
Vote Them Out
“Soon, Democrats will be able to join Biden on his weekly vacations when Americans vote them out in less than 70 days,” she added, referring to the midterm congressional elections.
A Non-Stop Job
White House spokesman Andrew Bates pushed back on the criticism of Biden’s travel, saying, “The presidency is a nonstop job that chief executives can do from anywhere in the world.”
Although Biden’s staff dispute the characterization that he’s not working during the trips, he’s generally out of the public eye for most of his days away from DC while relaxing with family members and friends.
