OP is a young professional who works in an office setting.
One of his coworkers is a veteran who is now confined to a wheelchair.
They Get Along Fine
The disabled veteran is great at his job, and OP gets along with him really well.
They have worked together for about 5 years.
They Knocked It Out of the Park
Recently, OP’s team at work delivered a big project ahead of schedule and under budget, and they all got bonuses for a job well done.
They Celebrated All Night Long
To celebrate, the team went out to a steakhouse for dinner.
Afterwards, OP and a few others went to a local brewery to continue the party.
The Party Just Got Better
At the bar, OP met a nice young woman, and the two of them hit it off.
She was there with some friends, too, and they all decided to sit together at a table.
Everyone Was Hitting It Off
While he chatted with the new girl, OP couldn’t help but notice his disabled coworker had also struck up a conversation with one of the women.
He Was Happy for Them
After sitting with the group for a while, OP and his new female friend broke away to get a couple more drinks.
As they continued to talk, he mentioned how their two friends seemed to have hit it off, too.
He Had a Lot to Offer
OP’s companion told him that her friend was a veteran, too, and that was a strong connection.
Her friend also admired and sympathized with the fact that OP’s friend had been injured in the service.
He Had a Secret to Tell
That struck OP as odd, and he wanted to set the record straight.
Maybe because he was already well-lubed with alcohol, he decided to tell his new friend a secret about his coworker.
He Was Lying to Them All
The coworker was disabled and was a veteran, OP said.
But the disability was the result of the man’s own drinking and driving.
It Was All His Fault
At some point before OP met him, his coworker had driven off the road and hit a tree while he was drunk.
That led to a DUI charge and his permanent disability.
She Wasn’t Happy
After that round of drinks, the group of women went to the restroom.
When they came back, OP could see his coworker’s new friend was angry.
He Hung With the Girls
The women asked OP to stick around for a while, but didn’t really want the rest of his group at the table anymore.
So OP stayed to talk to his new friend for the rest of the evening while his coworkers went about their business.
They Talked Her Down
The woman who was a veteran was definitely honked off, and her friends had to talk her out of telling off OP’s coworker.
They Grilled Him at Work
At work on Monday, one of the group from the brewery asked OP if someone had done something to make the women mad.
He Fessed Up
So OP again told the truth and fessed up about tattling on their disabled coworker.
There Was a Confrontation
During the course of the day, word got around to the veteran, and he confronted OP about what he had done.
He Was a Complete Jerk
The veteran said it’s hard enough to find nice women to date when you’re in a wheelchair.
Calling him out like that made OP a complete a-hole, as far as he was concerned.
He Should Have Been Truthful
OP apologized to his coworker and admitted it wasn’t his place to say anything.
But he also said the veteran should have been upfront with the new girl in the first place.
He Was Riled Up
That didn’t sit well with the vet, who stomped off and didn’t seem like he was in the mood to forgive OP.
They All Had Something to Say
The whole situation became office gossip, and coworkers weren’t shy about letting OP know how they felt about what he did.
Some were on his side; some thought he was a jerk.
Redditors are also somewhat torn on this situation.
Many of them think OP was perfectly justified for spilling the beans about his coworker, especially since he was using his self-inflicted disability to try and get a date.
But others say it was really none of OP’s business and he should have kept his mouth shut.
And even some who don’t think it was OP’s place to tell are appalled at what they term “stolen valor” on the part of the veteran.
