A young woman divided Redditors with her plan to fight back against racism in her workplace. Everyone loves the idea, but some fear the consequences. Here is the full story.
Good News and Bad News

When OP graduated from college in Georgia, she landed her dream job.
The only problem was that it was in the Pacific Northwest, about as far from home as possible.
She Knew It Was Coming

OP knew there would be some culture shock moving so far away, and that turned out to be the case.
She Felt Alone

In her new city, and especially at work, OP often found herself to be the only black person in a room full of people.
Everyone Was Nice

For the most part, though, OP was happy that she didn’t experience much overt racism.
Everyone seemed to get along pretty well.
Race Was an Issue

But OP did run into several awkward situations that had race-based components to them, even if no one was behaving in an overtly racist manner.
She Was a Constant

One example was that every white woman OP met ended up mentioning Beyonce in some way or another during their initial conversations. Very weird!
Things Got Personal

At work, the problem was a little more personal for OP.
They Couldn’t Remember Her Name

For some reason, hardly anyone could keep OP’s name straight, even though it was a very simple one.
It Was Almost Too Easy

Coworkers were constantly adding extra syllables when they pronounced OP’s name, and some of them asked her over and over how to pronounce it.
It Went All the Way to the Top

Even when OP again told them how to pronounce her easy name, some boss or coworker would say it wrong and start the whole cycle over.
They Made It “More Black”

As far as OP could tell, her name just wasn’t “black sounding” enough for her white coworkers, so they changed it up on their own.
She Set the Tone

To make matters worse, OP learned that one other black woman used to work at the company.
She was much older and held a different position, but many coworkers continually called OP by the other woman’s name.
She Had a Plan

So, tired of being good humored about the whole thing and gently correcting her teammates time after time, OP came up with another plan.
She Would Turn the Table

OP wanted to adopt a generic name for all of her white coworkers and use that name whenever they used the wrong one for her.
There Would Be Consequences

So, if a white guy called her by the other black woman’s name, OP would call him “Chad” in her response.
Women Weren’t Safe, Either

And if the offender was a white woman, OP would call her Jennifer.
She Has No Options

OP admits that approach is passive aggressive, but she’s tried to be polite about the situation.
She doesn’t really want to blow up at anyone, either.
It Would Make Them Think

So OP thinks maybe this would get some people’s attention and maybe make them think a little more about what they’re saying.
She Wants to Have Some Fun

And even if it doesn’t pan out, OP could at least have a little ful with a situation that’s become super frustrating and hurtful.
Redditors have mixed feelings about this situation.
There Are No Easy Solutions

Most commenters agree that OP’s idea is justified and even sounds funny.
But some worry she could be seen as unprofessional and might hurt her career prospects.
Several suggest that OP should go to HR with her concerns.
