A young woman stirred up Redditors after she told her mother that she didn’t love her Ukrainian grandmother. Some people are just hard to love. Here is the full story.
She Has Choices
OP is a 15-year-old girl who lives with her parents in Italy.
But she’s way closer to her grandparents.
They Were Never Around
That’s because OP’s mom and dad have spent most of their waking hours working in her dad’s restaurant ever since she was born.
He’s Mad About It
To pick up the slack, OP’s Italian grandparents, her dad’s folks, have mostly raised her.
And that’s a bit of a sore spot with her dad.
He Can’t Stand Them
For reasons OP has never been able to figure out, her dad has always talked bad about his parents.
He doesn’t get along with his siblings, either.
She’s Not From Around There
Meanwhile, OP’s mother is from Ukraine, and her parents lived there all their lives.
The War Drove Them Away
But when Russia invaded Ukraine, the grandparents fled the country and came to live with OP’s family in Italy.
They Were Very Controlling
Things were fine for a few weeks while OP’s grandparents got settled in, but it didn’t take long before they were trying to control everything the girl did.
They Tossed Her Tomboy Clothes
OP likes to wear baggy clothes, but her grandparents wanted her to look more feminine.
So they started throwing away the clothes they didn’t like.
She Had No Privacy
And the grandparents were constantly rooting around in OP’s stuff, basically being nosy.
They also moved things around without even asking.
She Ogled the Girl
One time, OP’s Ukrainian grandmother walked in on her while she was changing.
And even when OP asked the old woman to leave, she refused.
Tragedy Struck
Not long after her Ukrainian grandparents moved in with the family, tragedy struck when OP’s Italian grandfather passed away.
She Was Crushed
OP’s Italian grandparents had been married for 52 years, and her grandmother was devastated.
She Just Wanted to Help
In the weeks that followed her grandfather’s death, OP started spending more time than ever at her grandmother’s house.
She wanted to give her any comfort she could and often spent the night.
She Wasn’t Being Fair
That didn’t sit well with OP’s mom, though, who told her she needed to spend as much time with her Ukrainian grandparents as she did with her Italian grandmother.
She Had Issues With Them
OP told her mom about the boundary issues she was having with her Ukrainian grandparents.
And she also explained that her Italian grandmother really needed support during that tough period.
Mom Wasn’t Buying It
But OP’s mom wasn’t hearing it and insisted that she needed to respect her Ukrainian grandparents and spend more time with them.
She Had to Love Them the Same
Not only that, OP’s mom said, but she expected her daughter to love all of her grandparents equally.
She Didn’t Love the Old Woman
That was the last straw for OP, and she told her mother that she would never love her Ukrainian grandmother the way she loved her Italian grandmother.
She Was Her Real Mom
Her Italian grandmother was more of a mom to her than her own mother, and she also respected the girl’s boundaries.
There Was No Competition
There was no comparison between the two grandmothers, as far as OP was concerned.
Mom Called Her an A-hole
OP’s mom was furious and called her daughter an a-hole for being so insensitive.
She Can’t Make Her Love Someone
But OP doesn’t think it’s fair for her mother to try and dictate how much she loves someone, especially her disrespectful grandmother.
Redditors overwhelmingly support OP and say that her mother can’t tell her how to feel.
Many also point out that neither OP’s mother, nor her Ukrainian grandmother are showing her any respect. They’re not surprised the girl feels the way she does.
