OP works at the door of a huge American retail store.
It’s the type of place that’s in just about every community across the country.
They Took Control
During the pandemic, OP’s store started limiting customers to entering and exiting through one door.
That helped the place keep a handle on how many people were inside at a given time.
There Were Too Many People
Part of OP’s job was to work that door on her shift, but there was often a traffic jam of workers for that task.
She Had Strict Rules
The shift boss had told OP and her coworkers several times that a maximum of two store employees should be stationed at the in-out door at any given time.
They Had Other Work to Do
That helped limit contact with the public and also freed up members of OP’s team to do other work during their shifts.
She Could Do It Alone
And OP knew that two people could easily handle even the busiest times.
She had manned the door by herself several times since the pandemic started.
They Didn’t Get Along
But one of her coworkers didn’t agree with that stance and was a constant thorn in OP’s side.
He Was an Old Grump
Even before the pandemic, OP and this guy didn’t see eye to eye.
Part of it was the generation gap since he was in his 70s and OP was considerably younger.
He Hated Women
But a big part of it was that the old man was a misogynist and continually put down OP and tried to boss her around at every turn.
She Was Late to the Party
One day when OP arrived for work, she saw that there were already 3 employees stationed at the door where the public entered and exited.
She Steered Clear
Because her boss had been very clear about the rules and had taken the team to task several times already, OP steered clear of the area.
She Made Herself Useful
Instead, OP went to one of the other main front doors to make sure that no customers tried to force their way in.
She could redirect them to the proper entrance and help maintain the distancing rules.
He Wouldn’t Back Down
It didn’t take too long for OP’s nemesis to notice that she was in the “wrong” place, though.
So the old man left his station and marched over to OP.
He Demanded She Move
When they were face to face, the man started yelling at OP and demanded that she go to the entrance that was open to the public.
She Wanted to Follow the Rules
OP pointed out that there were already 3 people there and reminded him of their boss’s rules.
She Finally Gave In
But the guy didn’t care and continued to order OP around.
Tired of fighting, OP finally agreed to return to the other door with the old man.

Before she left with him, though, OP told her coworker that she would throw him under the bus if they got in trouble with their boss.
He Didn’t Care
The old man just grumbled and said “whatever” as he walked OP back to the other side of the store.
It Was a Traffic Jam
Sure enough, the boss showed up within the hour to find 5 employees at the main door.
Besides OP, yet another coworker had returned from lunch to clog things up more.
