A young woman divided Redditors when she refused to go to her sister’s child-free wedding even though she herself doesn’t have kids. The whole thing was just too darn messy for her to handle. Here is the full story.
Only One Is Worth Her Time
OP is a 23-year-old woman, with 3 sisters, ages 27, 30, and 32. She is really only close with her middle sister.
She Left Them All Behind
For one thing, OP’s oldest sister lives overseas and doesn’t have much to do with the family, especially the 27-year-old.
The Dudes Are a Problem
And OP isn’t close with the 27-year-old largely due to the men in their lives.
They Can’t Stand Each Other
OP’s husband and her sister’s fiancé grew up together, and now they can’t stand each other.
Some ugly stuff went down between them, and it’s enough to cause the sisters troubles even years later.
She’s Sleeping With the Enemy
And now that third sister is getting married to the guy OP’s husband can’t stand.
No Kids Allowed
So it was already a messy situation that got even worse when OP’s sister announced that her wedding would be child-free.
She Didn’t Care
OP doesn’t have any kids, so that part of the wedding wasn’t a big deal.
She Had a Tough Choice
But OP’s 30-year-old sister does have kids, which meant she’d have to find somewhere to leave them during the wedding, or not attend.
She Had No One
To make things harder, that sister is a single mom with no one to ask to watch her kids other than OP or their parents.
And, naturally, the parents planned to go to their third daughter’s wedding.
She Wanted to Go
OP’s two sisters were pretty close, too, and she knew her sister with the kids really wanted to be at the wedding.
She Was Walking a Tightrope
So the wedding plans got pretty tense as OP’s bride-to-be sister tried to make sure everyone would be there but would not bring their kids.
He Wasn’t Going
And, since OP’s husband wanted no part of the wedding, he was going to take off work so he could drop her off and pick her up.
But he wasn’t going to attend the wedding.
She Made a Decision
Finally, after weeks of hand-wringing and scheming, OP had had enough of the turmoil and made a decision.
She Would Sacrifice Herself
OP told her sisters that she would watch the 30-year-old’s kids so that the rest of the family could be together at the wedding.
She Wasn’t Happy
The bride-to-be didn’t like that idea at all and told OP she really wanted her to be there.
She Had to Think Fast
OP tried to come up with some solid excuses why her plan was the best.
She Was the Right Choice
First, OP said that her other sister really wanted to be there.
Then she said that the older sister could handle their elderly parents better than she could.
She Would Pay
But OP’s youngest sister said she was being selfish and finally offered to pay for a babysitter for the middle sister’s kids.
She Fessed Up
At that point, OP had to admit that she just didn’t want to go to the wedding.
She said that she wouldn’t be coming even if there were other options for childcare.
She Doesn’t Care About Her Feelings
That really hurt her bride-sister’s feelings.
OP admits she doesn’t feel too bad about that.
She Wants to Keep the Peace
But her middle sister, with the kids, is upset about all the fighting and thinks OP should reconsider.
She’s Laughing at Them From Afar
Meanwhile, OP’s overseas sister thinks she’s right to avoid their child-free sibling and stay completely away from the wedding.
Redditors are divided on this situation.
Many of them think OP has the right to not go to the wedding if she wants.
But some of them call her out for lying about her intentions and feelings, and for trying to weasel out of the ceremony without telling her sisters what was really going on.
