They Have Different Styles
OP is a 33-year-old mother of 4. She has a 35-year-old sister who has a 3-year-old daughter. The two sisters don’t quite see eye-to-eye when it comes to parenting.
It’s the Mom’s Fault
OP says that her niece acts like a typical 3-year-old, but the problem is how the child’s mother reacts. She lets the kid get away with murder, basically.
They Always Give In
Like most little kids, OP’s niece tends to scream when she doesn’t get her way. But instead of trying to redirect her or hand out some consequences, the girl’s parents always give in.
She Wants to Raise Good People
OP admits that it’s tough to hear your kids crying, and she thinks it’s okay sometimes to give them what they want.
Most of the time, though, the parent needs to set them on a better path and help them learn how to be good people who can live in society.
She Can’t Stand the Tears
But OP’s sister doesn’t see it that way. She’ll do anything to make her daughter happy in the moment. Predictably, that often leads to all sorts of problems for the sister and her family.
She Wanted to Go Somewhere Else
Around the holidays, for example, OP and her kids went on a trip to an aquarium with her sister and niece.
Along the way, the little girl started screaming because she wanted her mother to take a different route.
She Changed Her Mind
OP’s sister explained that there was a landmark the girl liked to see, so she turned around even though it would add 15 minutes to their route.
Then, about halfway there, the toddler changed her mind and wanted to go the original direction.
She Gave Them Whiplash
So OP’s sister turned around again, adding even more time to their trip and annoying everyone in the car.
They Moved In
More recently, OP’s sister broke her leg while her husband was out of town. Since she couldn’t drive, OP had her and the niece come stay at her house for a while.

One evening, OP took her sister with her to pick up the kids at school. They stopped at the niece’s preschool last and then headed for home.
They Were Already Late
Right away, the little girl broke into one of her fits because she didn’t like the route OP was taking.
Her mother told OP to just turn around so the girl would stop screaming, but OP refused since they were already running late because her niece had fought getting into the car.
She Wasn’t Playing Nice
So OP continued on her path and the little girl continued to throw a fit.
At some point, OP’s sister apologized to her daughter and said her aunt wasn’t being very nice.
