OP is white, and her husband is African-American.
Their son has the characteristics of both parents and both races.
She Helped Him Learn
Recently, the boy got his learner’s permit, and OP took him out for some driving practice.
He Made a Mistake
While they were driving through traffic, OP’s son accidentally cut off another driver.
The man behind the wheel of the truck had to brake quickly to avoid a collision.
She Tried to Fix It
OP told her son to be more careful, and she also gave a “sorry” wave to the other driver.
But that wasn’t good enough.
He Wanted Revenge
At the next red light, the truck pulled up next to OP and her son.
The driver rolled down his window, and then things got really crazy.
He Was a Racist Pig
The man behind the wheel of the truck yelled at OP’s son and called him the N-word.
All the blood drained from the young man’s face, and OP could see he was scared and mortified.
She Knew How to Find Him
Shocked at the racist outburst, OP glared at the man but also studied his vehicle.
It was a work truck, with the company name and contact information clearly visible.
He Was Devastated
OP and her son were quiet the rest of the way home, and the boy was down and hurt for days afterward.

Completely furious and sickened by the other driver’s actions, OP looked up his company online.
She saw that they had worked hard to develop a friendly and professional image.
She Reported Him
OP was sure the company wouldn’t be happy with their driver’s behavior, so she decided to call them up.

When OP described the incident, including the time and location, the person on the other end of the phone said they knew exactly who she was talking about.

The company rep also told OP that all of their drivers had dashcams, so it would all be caught on video.
Then the company would handle the situation appropriately.

Satisfied that the racist driver was going to get what was coming to him, OP put the incident behind her and tried to help her son move on.

Then, several months later, OP was browsing Facebook during a few minutes of downtime.
One of the FB suggestions was a page for the company where the racist had worked.
It Was a Big Deal
Out of curiosity, OP clicked over and found a recent post where the company was celebrating the completion of a big project.
He Was Living Large
OP was shocked and sickened to see the man who had shouted the racial slur at her son, right in the middle of the pack and grinning ear to ear.
She Wouldn’t Let It Go
Since the company had obviously not taken any lasting action against the man, OP decided to ramp up her efforts.
She Went Big Time
The company where the racist worked was part of a national chain, so OP called the corporate offices and explained to them what had happened.
He Had No Future
The man OP spoke to at the top of the food chain was sickened by his employee’s behavior and told OP there was no place for a person like that in their company.
He’s Good as Gone
Based on that conversation, OP is pretty sure that the driver is going to lose her job.
She Destroyed Him
While OP is happy that the company is finally taking action, she wonders if she went too far by reporting the bigot twice and maybe destroying his life.
For their part, Redditors think OP did the right thing and shouldn’t feel guilty at all.
She didn’t cause the situation, and she was obligated to report the racist behavior, they say.
Some commenters think OP was too quick to put the incident out of her mind and should have followed up with the local office much sooner.
