He Was the Best of the Best
OP is a 36-year-old woman who is married to a 36-year-old man.
Her husband comes from a family of athletes, and he stood out even among them.
He Could Take a Punch
Like a lot of kids, OP’s husband tried different sports when he was a kid, and the one that really stuck was boxing.
They Wanted Him to Excel
He showed a lot of talent even as a young boxer, and his parents pushed him to do more and more.
He Coulda Been a Contender!
By the time he was in high school, OP’s husband was on track to becoming a professional boxer, and his parents were pushing harder and harder.
He Wanted Out
But the high school coaches were brutal with their approach to training, and he started to pull back.
He couldn’t put the genie back in the bottle, though.
Everyone Had Noticed Him
Coaches from other schools had noticed OP’s husband and his talent in the ring.
And so had boxing promoters.
They Saw a Payday
OP’s now-in-laws were frothing at the mouth at the mere thought of their son going pro.
They no doubt had dollar signs in their eyes.
He Was Quitting for Good
But as high school wound down, OP’s husband finally stood up for himself.
He told his parents he was going to college and giving up boxing for good.
It Was a Secret Fight
The first part of that declaration was true, but OP’s husband was able to land a boxing scholarship.
So he had to keep fighting all the way through college.
They Were Done With Him
Once he made that decision, though, OP’s relationship with his parents was never the same.
They basically stopped talking to each other, and his parents wrote him off.
She Was There All Along
OP started dating her husband right before high school, so she has been there for the whole bumpy ride.

She also watched and supported him as he finished his degree, started his career, and built two successful businesses.

The men went out to run some errands, which left OP sitting around talking with her sisters-in-law and mother-in-law.
She Shouldn’t Push It
At one point, one of the sisters-in-law mentioned that her son had some talent for playing the piano.
OP’s mother-in-law told her daughter not to encourage the boy.
He Ruined His Life
The older lady went on to say that by pushing the piano on her grandson, her daughter might drive him to quit completely and ruin his life.
Just like OP’s husband, she said.
She Was Sitting Right There
OP didn’t know if her mother-in-law forgot she was there or what, but she couldn’t let it slide.
She asked how exactly her husband had ruined his life.
