A Virginia Democratic candidate for the state’s House of Delegates performed sex acts with her husband online and asked her virtual audience to “tip” them. Here’s the story.
Tip Money

A Virginia Democratic candidate running for the commonwealth’s House of Delegates has been accused of performing sex acts with her husband in front of an online audience and then requested viewers to send them “tip” money.
More Than a Dozen Videos

Susanna Gibson, a nurse practitioner running in her first election cycle, and a 40-year-old mother of two, is said to have posted more than a dozen videos that were archived on a pornographic site in September 2022, which is after she officially entered the race, and the most recent videos were archived on Sept. 30, 2022.
Raising Money for a Good Cause

Gibson reportedly violated the pornographic site’s terms and conditions, by soliciting tips in order to perform specific sex acts and could be seen on video, telling viewers that she was raising money for a “good cause.”
Private Room

Gibson is said to have told viewers that she would perform specific sex acts in a “private room” if viewers paid her more “tokens.”
A Husband and Two Young Children

Ms. Gibson, who appears on her campaign website in hospital scrubs as well as at home with her husband and two young children, is running for the House of Delegates in one of only a handful of competitive races that will determine control of the General Assembly.
Slim Majority

Republicans hold a slim majority in the House, and Democrats narrowly control the State Senate, but both chambers are up for grabs in November.
Invasion of Privacy

In a statement, Gibson called the publicly posted videos “an illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me and my family.”
Not Dropping Out

“It won’t intimidate me and it won’t silence me,” Gibson said. “My political opponents and their Republican allies have proven they’re willing to commit a sex crime to attack me and my family because there’s no line they won’t cross to silence women when they speak up.”
Ms. Gibson gave no indication she was considering dropping out of the race.
Revenge Porn Law Violated

Gibson’s lawyer, Daniel P. Watkins said that spreading the videos could be a violation of Virginia’s revenge porn law, which makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor to “maliciously” circulate sexual images or another person’s nudity with “intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate.”
Working with the FBI

“It’s illegal and it’s disgusting to disseminate this kind of material, and we’re working closely with the F.B.I. and local prosecutors to bring the wrongdoers to justice,” Mr. Watkins said.
The lawyer cited a Virginia Appeals Court ruling in 2021 that it was illegal for a man to secretly record his girlfriend during a consensual sexual encounter, even if that video was never shared with others.
Social Media Support and Reactions

Sen. L. Louise Lucas, a top-ranking Virginia Democrat, said on X (formerly Twitter) “Now we are going to make this the biggest fundraising day of her campaign,” in support of Gibson.
Who Cares?

Additional support came on X, one user simply said ‘Who cares? She and her husband are consenting adults!”

Others were not so understanding, “This is the most insane story on so many levels. Susanna Gibson (D) was running for public office while posting sex tapes online for money on September 11th.”
Once Posted Online It’s Always There

Another declared, “Nothing ever leaves the ‘net.”
Trump’s “Pee Tape”

“Weren’t Democrats the ones who were obsessed over a mythical pee tape featuring a former President?” quipped one user.
Would You Vote for Her?

“Knowing this about her, would you vote for her? Another user questioned.
How Can You Expect Privacy?

More questions came on X, “She publicized it, streamed it herself. How does she have any expectation of secrecy?”
Difficult Time for Susanna and Her Family

Gibson won a Democratic primary in June and is running against Republican businessman David Owen in one of the most competitive districts in the state.
When Owen was reached for a statement, he said “I’m sure this is a difficult time for Susanna and her family, and I’m remaining focused on my campaign,”
