Times Were Tough
OP is a supervisor in a healthcare setting and has been working nonstop since the pandemic started.
Her company froze wages, and they had been working with a staffing shortage for three years.
She Was on the Clock Forever
Not only that, but patients were sicker than ever due to COVID-19 infections, and they needed more intense care.
As a result, OP hadn’t had a vacation in five years.
She Was Overwhelmed and Exhausted
As a result, OP was completely burned out when she finally saw a chance for a break.
She put in her vacation request early and started mapping out her time off.
It Would Be a Blast
OP planned a trip with her husband to see her all-time favorite band on their reunion tour.
And, despite only planning to travel for five days, she booked two weeks off to try and recover from the increased workload over the past few years.
She Desperately Wanted a Break
In the meantime, one of the other supervisors asked for time off at the last minute.
The request overlapped with vacation time that two other employees had planned, so it normally would have been a no go.
She Got Special Treatment
But because the other woman was friends with the boss, her request was granted.
OP wasn’t too worried because there was a third supervisor scheduled to return from vacation before OP left.
It Was a Disaster
Then disaster struck when that third supervisor had an accident during her vacation and ended up on medical leave.
That meant the boss’s buddy would be the lone supervisor while OP went on vacation.
She Panicked Right Away
OP knew right away that meant trouble because the one remaining supervisor doesn’t know how to manage the department.
And, sure enough, the other woman panicked when she found out she’d be manning the ship alone.
They Needed Her Help
First, OP’s coworker approached their boss hysterical about being the sole supervisor for the next two weeks.
Then, predictably, they came to OP and asked her to cut her vacation short to help cover the responsibilities.
She Said No Way
But OP refused to change her vacation plans.
She was completely frazzled, and she felt like she had earned the right to some time off after such a long stretch of nonstop work.
It Was the Boss’s Fault
Besides, OP followed proper channels to get her time off approved.
The boss created the sticky situation by allowing her friend to take time off when there were others already on vacation.
Was She in Trouble?
But OP’s boss and coworker told her she wasn’t being a team player.
Her boss even accused her of “not maintaining operational requirements.”
They Would All Suffer
OP felt bad that the place would probably fall apart with her nervous coworker in charge, and she was worried that patient care would suffer.
But she still wanted her time off and thought she deserved it.
