Just as the 2024 presidential campaign started to heat up, Republican Tim Scott’s main financial backer said they were done “wasting” their money on a non-Trump candidate. Here’s what the move means for Scott and his campaign moving forward.
A Rising Star
South Carolina senator Tim Scott is viewed by many as a rising star in the Republican party. And an easy victory in last November’s elections left him with a surplus of cash for future campaigns.
Gunning for the Top
Drawing on his growing status in the party and those sizable cash reserves, thought to be about $20 million last spring, Scott threw his hat into the race for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.
Doling Out the Dough
Since then, Scott and his campaign haven’t been shy about spending all that money. According to a New York Times report, Scott spent about $12.5 million on advertising through the end of September.
He Has Help
But the candidate wasn’t going it alone, as Scott also has the backing of a powerful political action committee, or PAC, as do most other candidates in the race.
Trust in the Spending
The Trust in Mission PAC, also known as TIMPAC, has jumped in with both feet to support Scott’s candidacy. According to the Times, TIMPAC has spent $5 million this year in Iowa alone to get Scott’s message out to voters.
Underwater for a Cause
Entering July, TIMPAC had about $15 million in cash on hand, according to the report. Even so, they pushed all their chips in on Scott, reserving about $40 million of advertising space to run through the fall.
Abandoning Ship?
But in mid-October, the PAC turned an abrupt about-face. They pulled out on what the Times can only quantify as “millions” of dollars of ad spend that had been scheduled through the end of the year.
An Easy Choice
The decision to pull the plug right now was pretty easy, according to Rob Collins, co-chairman of the PAC.
Done Wasting Money
Writing in a memo to donors to announce the move, Collins said, “We aren’t going to waste our money when the electorate isn’t focused on or ready for a Trump alternative.”
Not a Lost Cause
That may seem to cast a pretty dark shadow over Scott’s campaign, but Collins added a bit of wiggle room for the future.
Not Gaining Ground
According to Collins, TIMPAC has been watching poll numbers and voter responses closely over the last several months. And it seems that no matter what they do to push Scott’s campaign, he’s not making any progress in the polls.
Things Could Change
But, says Collins, he doesn’t rule out that the situation could change as the 2024 election draws nearer and Donald Trump’s legal battles move closer to a conclusion.
Last-Minute Decisions
In that memo to donors, Collins said that he believes two-thirds of Iowa voters will make up their minds in the last six weeks before the January 15 caucus.
Happy Holidays?
That would seem to make December 1 a sort of ad hoc deadline for whether or not TIMPAC will jump back on the Scott bandwagon with both feet.
Boots on the Ground
In the meantime, Collins said, the PAC will continue to spend money on door-to-door campaigns to try and get some grassroots support behind Scott’s candidacy.
He’s the Only Choice
On the campaign front, spokesman Matt Gorman remained optimistic, saying that Scott is the one candidate who continues to meet Republican voter expectations on a wide variety of issues.
Will His Campaign Turn Out to Be a Turkey?
Whether or not Scott gets the chance to push his message to a broader audience now seems to hinge on what happens between Halloween and Thanksgiving, much of which is beyond his control.
