What do Darth Vader and China have in common? To hear Mike Pence tell it, they’re both dead set on building an evil empire. Here’s the full story of Pence’s latest comments.
China Is the Problem
According to a study from Pew Research in July of 2023, about half of Americans consider China to be the biggest threat to the United States.
Russia Is a Second Thought
That’s really saying something considering that Russia is in the midst of an all-out war on Ukraine that most Americans vehemently oppose.
Putin Can’t Match China
Yet, only 17% of those same Americans feel Vladimir Putin is a bigger problem than China to the future of freedom and democracy.
They All Agree
Most of the candidates vying for the 2024 Republican nomination for President have echoed those thoughts on at least one occasion as election season draws near.
Pence Is on the Same Page
Speaking in mid-September at the conservative Hudson Institute, former vice president Mike Pence made it clear that he was right there with the crowd on this one.
Huge Threat Looming
During his speech, Pence called China the biggest economic and strategic threat to the United States.
Then he took his warning to a deeper, nerdier place.
Channeling the Gipper
Whipping out language that only Star Wars fans or 1980s conservatives could really fully understand to their core, Pence whipped out a favorite Ronald Reagan trope.
A Budding Evil Empire
“China may not yet be an evil empire – but it is working hard to become one,” Pence said.
A Reagan Favorite
Reagan was a frequent flier with the “evil empire” language, slathering the title on the Soviet Union whenever the occasion presented itself.
Pence Has a Plan
But Pence wasn’t just up there at the podium for name-calling.
No, he had some remedies in mind that might help guard against the impending doom.
He Wants to Boost Taiwan
For starters, the presidential hopeful called on the U.S. to ramp up arms sales to Taiwan while also cutting ties with key Chinese industries.
Protecting America’s Intellect
Pence followed up by proposing that Chinese citizens working in the U.S. should be restricted from tech jobs. That’s the only way to protect America’s intellectual property, he said.
He Went in for the Kill
And then Pence really lowered the boom, taking dead aim at current events and, more pointedly, his fellow Republicans.
More Support for Ukraine
Many of the other conservative presidential candidates have called for pulling back on support to Ukraine in their ongoing war with Russia. But Pence says it’s imperative that the U.S. give Ukraine everything they need to drive Putin out of their country.
A Scary Thought
He asked the audience to consider what the outcome might be if the U.S. really did pull their support from Ukraine and left it to fend for itself.
Green Light for China
“What message would it send to China, except a giant, flashing green light for the Chinese invasion of Taiwan?” Pence asked rhetorically.
They Want What’s Theirs
Like Russia with Ukraine, China has long claimed that Taiwan is rightfully a part of the larger People’s Republic of China and not a sovereign country of its own.
One China?
So, will the budding evil empire stage its own invasion to take back what it sees as its property?
He Won’t Let It Happen
Mike Pence says that’s almost a certainty if the U.S. lets Ukraine fall.
And, of course, if voters don’t elect him.
