Cancer Research UK, which backed this pioneering work, has described the findings as “remarkable” and is optimistic that clinics will soon adopt this practice for patients.

The Concern of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer remains a considerable health concern, impacting numerous women in the UK, particularly those in their early 30s. Despite improvements in radiotherapy care, nearly a third of cases experience cancer recurrence, underscoring the urgent need for novel approaches.

Dr. Iain Foulkes, from Cancer Research UK, emphasized the importance of timing in cancer treatment, stating, “A growing body of evidence is showing the value of additional rounds of chemotherapy before other treatments like surgery and radiotherapy in several other cancers.”

Hopefully Will Reduce the Chances of Cancer’s Return

Dr. Foulkes continued, “Not only can it reduce the chances of cancer coming back, it can be delivered quickly using drugs already available worldwide. We’re excited for the improvements this trial could bring to cervical cancer treatment and hope short courses of induction chemotherapy will be rapidly adopted in the clinic.”

Trial Details

The trial involved 250 women with cervical cancer who received this groundbreaking treatment – an intensive six-week course of carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy, followed by the “usual” treatment, encompassing radiotherapy, weekly cisplatin, and brachytherapy, known as chemoradiation.

In comparison, the control group of 250 women received only the standard chemoradiation.

5 Years Later

Five years later, the results were astonishing. Of those who received the innovative treatment, 80% were alive, and 73% had not experienced a cancer recurrence or spread.

In contrast, the “usual” treatment group showed that 72% were alive, and 64% had not witnessed a cancer recurrence or spread.

Lead Investigator Shares Findings

Dr. Mary McCormack, the lead investigator of the trial, asserted that this short course of additional chemotherapy immediately preceding standard chemoradiation can slash the risk of cancer recurrence or death by 35%, marking the most significant improvement in cervical cancer treatment outcomes in over two decades.

Strides for Accessibility and Affordability

While this groundbreaking approach is incredibly promising due to the accessibility and affordability of the two chemotherapy drugs already approved for patient use, experts advise that not all women with cervical cancer will experience the same beneficial outcomes.

Unsure About Advanced Cases

The study primarily focused on women with localized cancers that had not yet metastasized, leaving uncertainty about its efficacy in advanced cases.

Potential Side Effects

Moreover, it is crucial to consider potential side effects, such as sickness, nausea, and hair loss.

Remarkable Breakthrough
