New Details Emerge About the Search and Rescue Operation for the Titan Submersible

The USA blocked a British vessel equipped to assist in the search for a missing Titan submersible, and they were prevented from joining the rescue mission. US officials favored using an American-made vehicle with lower capabilities. The decision to exclude the British vessel sparked controversy, with concerns raised about the potential loss of life. Here’s why.

Cold Shoulder to the Brits

In a reported incident, a British vessel capable of helping in the search for the missing Titan submersible got the cold shoulder and was denied.

This decision was because US officials favored a lower-quality American-made vehicle, as reported by The Telegraph

Magellan, a deep-sea-surveying company based in Guernsey, announced its readiness to deploy a specialist team and crucial rescue.

However, their participation was contingent on approval, according to reports.

Magellan, renowned for producing the first full-size 3D digital scan of the Titanic, possessed valuable experience with the shipwreck located approximately 12,500 feet underwater.

Additionally, they owned a remotely operated vessel capable of recovering submersibles from depths as far as 5,000 meters.

Bretton Hunchak, the former president of RMS Titanic Inc., highlighted the teamwork between this vessel and Magellan in previous rescue efforts.

Hunchak revealed that US officials, in collaboration with Canada, preferred an American vessel based in New York, designed to explore depths of up to 3,000 meters underwater.

This decision raised questions, with Hunchak advocating for the simultaneous use of both vessels, stressing the need to use all resources to save precious lives.

US Coast Guard’s Response

In a statement, Captain Jamie Frederick of the US Coast Guard claimed ignorance of reports regarding blocked rescue efforts.

He said several equipment choices were ready for the scene and highlighted the unified command’s focus on arranging the needed equipment and logistics.

Race Against Time

As the clock ticked, there was a growing sense of urgency in locating the five passengers aboard the Titan submersible, which in theory had less than 40 hours of oxygen remaining at the time.

The submersible, equipped with electric thrusters, possessed the capacity to transport five individuals to a depth of 13,123 feet, according to information from the OceanGate website.

The US Coast Guard searched a vast area of around 20,000 square kilometers.

Fortunately, a Canadian P-3 plane with sonar buoys picked up banging sounds near the submersible’s last known position, sparking hope for rescuing the trapped tourists.

Magellan’s website statement revealed that OceanGate, the maker of the Titan tourist submersible, had reached out to them earlier in the week for help with the rescue.

OceanGate directed Magellan to quickly move essential equipment and crew to St. John’s, Newfoundland, stressing the urgency of the situation.

One X-er (former Tweeter) commented “ Industry leaders and icons of the deep sea exploration community warned OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush about the dangers of the Titan. He ignored them all.”

Stockton Rush was warned repeatedly by deep-sea diving industry experts that his submersible was not safe, and that his actions were eventually going to result in the deaths of passengers.

It is deeply ironic (or perhaps cosmically justified) that he ended up being one of those passengers.
