Rachel Marie Powell, who is better known as the “Bullhorn Lady,” was sentenced to more than 4 years in prison for the part she played in the U.S. Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. She wrote, “My heart is breaking,” on social media a short time before a judge handed down her sentence.
Another January 6 Rioter Received a Lengthy Prison Sentence
There have been more than 1,000 people arrested over the last 2-plus years in connection with the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Many of them are still waiting for their days in court, but at least some of them have started to find out whether or not they’ll have to serve time in jail or face other punishments.
Another one just received a verdict.
A Woman Known as the “Bullhorn Lady” Was Sentenced to Jail
Rachel Marie Powell, a Pennsylvania woman who earned the nickname “Bullhorn Lady,” is the latest January 6 rioter to get sentenced to prison because of the part she played in the U.S. Capitol attack.
She Had Been Convicted on Nine Counts
She waived her right to a jury trial over the summer and was ultimately convicted on nine counts—including obstruction of an official proceeding, entering a restricted area with a weapon, and destruction of government property—by U.S. District Judge Royce Lambert.
She Played a Key Part in Orchestrating the January 6 Attack
Powell got the nickname “Bullhorn Lady” in the aftermath of the January 6 attack after she was captured on video wearing a blue hoodie and a pink hat and using a bullhorn to yell out instructions to her fellow rioters.
Prosecutors alleged that Powell gave rioters “very detailed instructions” in reference to the layout of the U.S. Capitol building while also encouraging them to “coordinate together” to get into the building.
She Also Got Very Violent During the January 6 Attack
Powell also did more than just yell throughout the January 6 attack. Prosecutors showed the judge a video that appeared to show her using a large pipe to break windows in the U.S. Capitol building.
She also could be heard yelling that rioters “have another window to break” in the building.
She Was Involved in Altercations With the Police
As if all of that wasn’t enough, Powell was also apparently involved in altercations with police officers outside of the U.S. Capitol building.
In one of these altercations, she was spotted using her back to push barriers that were set up around the U.S. Capitol building while police were standing on the other side of them.
She Was Turned In by an Anonymous Tipster
Despite there being video of Powell circulating, police weren’t initially able to track her down. But the FBI found her after an anonymous tipster informed the organization of her identity.
This tipster also sent the FBI a link to her Facebook profile, which featured a post in which she seemed to support the idea of a civil war starting in the U.S.
She Left Her Kids at Home to Be at the U.S. Capitol
Another interesting, albeit sad, tidbit to come out of Powell’s case was that she apparently left her kids back at home to go to the U.S. Capitol to attend the rally that turned into a riot.
She also agreed to take part in an interview with The New Yorker a short time after the January 6 attack for a story that was eventually titled “A Pennsylvania Mother’s Path to Insurrection.”
She Was Facing Up to 8 Years in Prison
Prosecutors in Powell’s case wanted to see her get thrown in prison for 8 years. They argued she deserved this much time because she took such an active role in the January 6 attack and then showed “an utter lack of remorse” when she was arrested for it.
She Wanted to Avoid Prison Altogether
In spite of the mounting evidence that prosecutors used against her, Powell argued that she didn’t think she deserved any prison time. She wanted U.S. District Judge Royce Lambert to let her off with little more than 3 years of probation.
She Asked People to Pray for Her Prior to Her Sentencing
Powell didn’t sound too optimistic before making her way into a courtroom this week to be sentenced for her role in the January 6 attack.
“Pray for me,” she wrote on X. “At 12:30 I’ll be sentenced. I’m trying to have hope but my heart is breaking right now.”
She Received a Fairly Harsh Prison Sentence
U.S. District Judge Royce Lambert very well could have thrown the book at Powell and given her at least 8 years in prison for her part in the January 6 attack. But he only ended up giving her 57 months behind bars.
She Was Also Hit With Other Penalties
U.S. District Judge Royce Lambert did, however, decide to give Powell more than just jail time. He also sentenced her to 36 months on supervised release following her prison stint. He ordered her to pay a $5,000 fine and $2,753 in restitution, too.
She Is Still Getting Support on Social Media
Although Powell will now spend the next few years of her life in jail, she’s receiving support from others on social media. Some have even started to suggest she could be pardoned if former President Donald Trump is re-elected in 2024.
“I am praying hard for you, just as I pray hard every night for God to keep President Trump healthy and safe,” one X user wrote. “He has promised to pardon every single J6er who did not physically attack anyone.”
She Is Also Facing Her Fair Share of Backlash
But obviously, not everyone is offering their support to Powell. There are others who have chimed in and told her she’s getting exactly what she deserves.
“Don’t try to overthrow the lawful government and you won’t face time for trying to overthrow the government,” another X user wrote.
