Mooching for Childcare? This Woman REFUSED to Pay for Her Friend’s Nanny, but She’s Not Sure Who’s Wrong

A young mother took to Reddit for opinions after she refused to pay a nanny to look after her son’s friend. It’s tough to share a good thing sometimes! Here is the full story.

OP and her husband have two kids, a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old son.

But They Have Some Help

OP and her husband also work full time, and they pay a nanny to take care of the kids during the day.

The nanny has also agreed to watch an extra child for up to 3 hours at a time when OP’s kids have friends over.

She charges her normal rate for that extra work.

But the nanny also won’t watch extra kids on a regular basis unless OP is willing to significantly increase her pay.

So OP and her husband are careful about any extra work they ask for.

OP’s older son has a friend who comes over for play dates sometimes during the school year.

The friend has a single mom who works a lot of hours, so she also needs some extra help during the summer.

So, there have been a few occasions outside the school year when OP’s nanny has watched all three kids for several hours at a time.

That costs more, so OP tries to limit how often that happens.

Recently, though, the friend’s mom came to OP and told her that her plans for summer childcare fell through.

She Asked for Help

Suddenly in a pinch, the single mom asked OP if her nanny could watch all three kids all summer long.

She Wanted More Money

OP asked her nanny if that was possible, and she was okay with it.

But she considered it a “nanny share” situation and wanted a one-third bump in pay.

OP and her husband were OK with carrying a little extra cost and offered to cover three quarters of the total weekly bill.

She Was Broke

But the friend’s mom told OP she couldn’t afford her portion of the nanny’s charges.

She Wanted Them to Pay

The single mom wanted OP and her husband to pay for the entire nanny bill to help her out.

She said it would cost her more than she made at her job.

They Gave Her Options

OP and her husband didn’t want to pay the extra money on their own, so they tried to help the single mom find other childcare options.

She Couldn’t Afford Anything

But the friend’s mom shot down every possibility, telling OP that she just couldn’t afford any of the available childcare options.

The whole situation left OP feeling torn and unsure what to do.

They Could Afford It

On the one hand, OP and her husband could afford to pay their nanny to take on the extra child during the summer.

It Was a Ton of Money

But on the other hand, the added expense would amount to about $2000 extra per month, and OP didn’t want to spend that much money for someone else’s kid.

They Refused to Pay

After much debate, OP told the single mom that they could not pay for her child’s nanny care.

She Said They Were Selfish

The friend’s mom broke into tears when she heard the news and told OP that she didn’t know what she was going to do.

She also said OP and her husband were being selfish.

Redditors overwhelmingly support OP’s decision to not pay for the other mother’s childcare.

They think that just because the woman fell on hard times, that doesn’t make it OP’s responsibility to pay for her kids.
