Where does Vice President Kamala Harris stand on abortion limits? If her recent comments are any indication, she may not have any better answer to that than you do. Here is the full story.
Harris Has a Clear Stance
During a recent appearance on Face the Nation, Kamala Harris told moderator Margaret Brennan that she had a very clear stance on abortion.
All About Roe v. Wade
What Harris wants, she insisted, is for Roe v. Wade to be reinstated.
It Should Be Law
But the vice president doesn’t just want the Supreme Court to vacate their 2022 decision on the long-standing abortion protection. Intead, Harris wants it turned into a federal law.
Stopped in Her Tracks
That stance prompted a follow-up question from Brennan, and it turned into a deer-in-the-headlights moment for the VP.
A Clearcut Question
“What is it that you believe? I mean, what week of pregnancy should abortion access be cut off?” Brennan asked.
Toeing the Party Line
Harris responded by wrapping herself in the party line: “We need to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade.”
She Pushed for Details
Brennan wasn’t content with that answer, though, and pushed Harris for more details.
The commentator pointed out that Roe v. Wade generally allowed for abortions until the point of fetal viability.
No Perfect Answer
Not everyone agrees where that viability line is, though, with a general scientific consensus seeming to be 21-24 weeks.
It depends on the circumstances, though.
A Broken Record
But Harris wouldn’t even get that specific.
She just swaddled herself again in the rhetoric of the need to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade.
A Skilled Tap Dancer
Brennan tried from several angles to get a more line-in-the-sand answer from the vice president, but Harris continued her tap dance.
Passing the Buck
At one point, Harris even brought President Joe Biden into the fray.
Second Verse, Same as the First
“From day one, the president has been clear, I have been clear. We need to put back the protections that are in Roe v. Wade into law,” Harris said.
Full-Term Abortions?
Brennan then tried a different tact, poking at Harris with the claims coming from Republicans.
Many in the GOP say that Democrats are dead set on allowing abortions all the way through the term of pregnancy.
Republicans Are Ridiculous
Predictably, Harris bristled at that idea and said the Republican claims were completely ridiculous.
They Jumped to Conclusions
Harris also said that Republicans were jumping to conclusions about the Democrat stance of trying to restore Roe v. Wade.
Missing the Point
Stirring emotions by bringing up full-term abortion is “mischaracterization of the point” about the importance of Roe v. Wade, the vice president said.
She Just Won’t Commit
When Brennan tried to open the door one last time for Harris to get specific, the VP continued to sidestep the issue of abortion limits.
She’s Playing Into Their Hands
By refusing to specify a timeframe when she thinks abortion is reasonable, Harris plays into Republican speculation about what her true intentions are.
Between a Woman and Her Doctor
And many progressives have argued over the years that abortion should be a decision between a woman and her doctor, regardless of how far along a pregnancy is.
She Opens Herself to Assumptions
Harris’s silence on the subject leaves her detractors to assume she falls into that no-limits camp, rightly or not.
