Trump has been scrutinized by a Republican governor who’s calling on his fellow candidates to take a “tougher stance” against the former president.
Governor Sununu Speaks Out
Republican Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire made a bombshell confession, pointing fingers at former President Donald Trump for the GOP’s election troubles.
The Trump Brand Backlash
In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sununu revealed that the “Trump brand just doesn’t work” and spoke about its impact on the party’s performance.
School Board Shockers
Governor Sununu dropped a bombshell, sharing how even Republican school board members lost their seats because they felt compelled to constantly defend their affiliation with Trump, “I’ve had school board members, Republican school board members, that have lost their seat because they felt like they had to constantly answer for being a Trump Republican,” he said.
Sununu argued that Trump’s negative influence extends beyond federal elections, affecting governorships, school boards, and congressional seats at all levels of government.
“It Just Doesn’t Work”
The governor emphasized that even in fiercely independent New Hampshire, Trump’s brand falls flat. “It just doesn’t work,” Sununu declared.
Democrats’ Sweeping Victory
New Hampshire was one of the states where Democrats achieved stunning victories in the 2022 midterm elections. Trump-aligned candidates struggled to win over the state’s traditionally independent voters.
Sununu’s Anti-Trump Stance
Governor Sununu, known as one of Trump’s most vocal critics, urged the GOP to move beyond Trump as the party’s de facto leader.
Tough Talk on Trump
Sununu called for tougher stances on Trump within the Republican primary race, praising Chris Christie for his willingness to challenge the former president, “Chris Christie kind of really goes nuclear on him and God bless Chris. He does a great job with that. He exposes a lot of that which I think is important.”
Targeting Vivek Ramaswamy
Sununu took aim at rising candidate Vivek Ramaswamy for his praise of Trump as “one of the greatest presidents.” The governor criticized what he saw as excessive “kowtowing” to Trump.
Too Much Adulation in the Debate
Sununu expressed his concern about the Republican presidential primary debate, where he believed there was still too much deference to Trump, singling out Vivek Ramaswamy for his mixed messaging.
Sununu’s Presidential Pass
Earlier this year, Governor Sununu made waves by passing on a 2024 presidential bid. He is known for his independent stance and willingness to challenge Trump.
The Trump Influence
Sununu’s comments revealed an ongoing struggle within the GOP, where the shadow of Trump continues to loom large.
