If a Donald Trump victory in the Iowa caucus was ever in doubt, a high-profile endorsement might have just sealed the deal. Here’s how an old Trump friend gave him a big mid-American boost heading into the 2024 election cycle.
Not Going It Alone
When Donald Trump barnstormed Iowa in the middle of October to get a head start on a state that’s key to the Republican nomination for President in 2024, he wasn’t alone.
Support from the Top
Not only were Trump and his entourage greeted by the type of frothed up crowds that has become the norm since 2016, but he also had a very vocal supporter in high places.
Bird Had Plenty to Say
Introducing Trump at a stop in Adel, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird had both some effusive praise for the once and would-be-future president and some promises to make on his behalf.
He’ll Lock It Down
Among the good news that Bird said Trump would deliver during a second term in office is securing the border.
He’s Got It All Covered
Oh, and fighting terrorists. And fixing the economy. And standing up for farmers. In fact, said Bird, Trump “will uphold our Constitution and our way of life.”
Good News All Around
Along with blowing that sunshine up Trump’s skirt, Bird also delivered some good news for the Republican candidate in a separate statement released the same week.
He’s Her Man
In that statement, Bird said that she “is proud to announce my endorsement of President Trump.”
She goes on to say that Trump is the only man who can defeat President Biden and make America prosperous (Great?) again.
A Key Milestone
For Iowans who have been paying attention the last few years, Bird’s endorsement of Trump is hardly surprising.
But it’s a big moment in his campaign, nonetheless.
Jimmy Carter Holdovers
It was just last year that Bird defeated incumbent AG Tom Miller, a Democrat. In winning, she became the first Republican to hold that office since 1979.
Pro-Life Is a Way of Life
Right away, it became clear that Bird was serious about her campaign promises to lean hard into her pro-life roots.
As soon as she took office, in fact, she made a big change.
No More Emergencies
In particular, Bird halted the state’s policy of paying for emergency contraceptives, which sometimes included abortion, in the case of rape.
She said at the time that her office was going to spend some time reviewing the policy.
Nip It in the Bud?
This summer, Bird said they were still working on the review, but she also admitted that she might just end the practice entirely.
He Needs Some Help
That hardline stance is a feather in Trump’s cap as he tries to win back some hardcore conservative votes he may have lost with recent statements regarding abortions.
A ‘Terrible Thing’ Happened on the Campaign Trail
That rift arose when Trump said that he thought a six-week abortion ban being batted around in certain states would be a “terrible thing.”
Iowa happens to be a state that already has such a law on its books.
He Needs to Get Radical
Polls show that Trump has a sizable lead in Iowa already, but regaining some of his far right-wing support could carry over to other states.
Waiting to Be Scratched Back
And if Trump does wind up back on the ballot next November, you can just about bet he’ll be tossing a few votes Bird’s way during her next election, too.
