Hollywood actors on strike have had their Halloween canceled by the union, who are urging them not to dress up as or “Promote” Hollywood characters on October 31st, without being paid a fair contract to do so.
Strike-Affected Stars Urged to Rethink Halloween Wardrobes
As the strike by members of the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (Sag-Aftra) continues into its 100th day, actors have been issued a unique request: ditch the famous film and TV character costumes this Halloween.
Halloween Costume Ban
Sag-Aftra has called on its striking members to abstain from dressing up as well-known film and TV characters.
Popular Characters to Avoid
The group specifically noted popular Halloween themes this year, citing iconic figures like Barbie, Marvel superheroes, and Netflix’s Wednesday Addams due to the release of this year’s popular film and series releases.
There’s Hope for Halloween Yet
Instead, they are encouraged to opt for “generalized characters and figures” like ghosts, zombies, and spiders.
A Message to Employers
A spokesperson for Sag-Aftra said, “Let’s use our collective power to send a loud and clear message to our struck employers that we will not promote their content without a fair contract.”
Social Media Silence
The union’s guidance extended to social media, advising members not to share Hollywood-related costumes online.
A Clear Message to Actors
The message is clear: actors should keep their Halloween celebrations “strike-friendly.”
Union Strike Enters 100th Day
Sag-Aftra members have been on strike since July, impacting film and television production across the industry.
No Sign of Change Soon
Talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers faltered last week, meaning this war could be endured for months to come.
George Clooney’s $150 Million Offer
In a remarkable show of support, Hollywood heavyweight George Clooney is leading a group of 15 A-list actors in proposing a $150 million offer in a bid that he hopes will get things back to normal.
No-Cap Membership Dues
Clooney’s group proposed a no-cap fee that higher earners would have to pay for memberships for the union, potentially generating up to $150 million over three years to support the union and improve health benefits.
Residuals for All
Clooney reiterated the commitment of top earners to support their fellow actors, “A lot of the top earners want to be part of the solution,” he said.
Higher-Earners Doing Their Bit
“We think it’s fair for us to pay more into the union,” Clooney said, in a selfless move that’s highly respected by the industry.
Top Actors Bridging the Wage Gap
Under their proposed plan, top stars would only receive residuals – long-term payments for reruns – once lower-paid actors have received theirs.
Solidarity Across the Industry
The strike has had wide-ranging consequences, affecting not only actors but thousands of crew members and the industry as a whole.
Actors Follow Writers Footsteps
As the Writers Guild of America recently ended its 148-day strike with a new three-year contract, the show of solidarity from actors revealed the depth of their commitment to the cause.
The Path Forward
As the strike enters its 100th day, the industry watches closely to see if this unique Halloween costume directive will impact negotiations.
