They’ve Been Busy
OP is a 28-year-old man who is married to a 26-year-old woman. The couple has been together since high school and has 5 children together.
Two for One
There are two boys, ages 6 and 4, and a girl, age 3.
And then OP’s wife gave birth to fraternal twins about 18 months ago.
She Had a Tough Time
It was that last pregnancy that really threw OP’s wife for a loop.
They knew she’d have a longer recovery time than she did with her first three kids, but they weren’t prepared for what was ahead of them.
They Needed Help
After the birth of the twins, OP’s wife was confined to bed rest for an extended period of time.
They even had to hire outside help to pitch in with the kids while OP was at work.
Work Kept Him Busy
OP’s dad ran an investment company, and OP worked for him in investor relations.
It was a gig he started right out of high school and involved a lot of travel, with his wife often coming, too.
Her Plans Got Derailed
OP’s wife should have graduated from high school the year they got married, but all the trips kept her from finishing.
And then, when the kids started coming, she never went back.
She never even took her GED exam.
She’d Make the Most of Her Time
But with her now confined to bed for most of the day, OP’s wife thought she could at least use the time to do something productive and improve herself.
So she enrolled in an online GED prep class.
She Was Having Fun
Even though high school had not been her favorite, OP’s wife really took to the self-paced setting.
She found the material to be pretty easy, and she was enjoying studying and learning like never before.
He Wasn’t Impressed
Once she was back on her feet, OP’s wife continued her studies, working them in around the kids’ schedules.
OP was happy she was enjoying herself, but he wasn’t all that impressed.
It Just Didn’t Matter
OP had glanced at the material his wife was studying a couple of times, and it looked pretty basic to him.
He couldn’t see how any of it would make a difference.
She Did It!
But OP’s wife kept on and eventually took her GED exam.
One day, she bounced into the room glowing with excitement and announced that she had passed.
It Wasn’t a Big Deal
It didn’t seem like that big of a deal to OP.
He didn’t think the GED would help his wife get a job, and he knew she couldn’t go to community college full time.
He Had More Important Things to Do
So OP just nodded and kept reading an “important email” from one of his clients.
It Hurt Her Feelings
OP could see that reaction didn’t go over well with his wife.
So he asked her what the problem was, and she said she was hurt because he didn’t seem very excited for her.
He Told Her So
Then OP reminded his wife that he had been telling her all along that getting a GED was no big deal since the subject matter was so simple.
But if it helped her prove to herself that she understood high school concepts, then at least the money hadn’t gone to waste.
She Worked Really Hard
That offended OP’s wife even more, and she told him she had worked very hard.
She also said the GED was the foundation for starting a career.
He Thinks It’s a Tiny Step
For OP, though, the bottom line is that his wife is at least 15 years away from a college degree. And he doesn’t think every little step along the way merits a celebration.
