Have you ever run into a bridezilla? Everyone’s heard at least one story about a bride who goes off the rails. This entitled woman expects her sister to give her tens of thousands of dollars for her wedding, even though she didn’t support her at all when the roles were reversed!
Luckily, her sister knows how to stand up for herself. Keep reading to find out what went down.
The Sisters Are at Odds
A 33-year-old woman, Sarah, has been dealing with a difficult situation with her younger sister, Jenny, who is 31.
Parents Gave Generous Wedding Presents to Both Sisters
Jenny recently got engaged to her fiancé and has been deep into wedding planning.
Their parents gifted each of them $25,000 as a wedding present when they got engaged to help with wedding expenses and start building some savings.
One Sister Saved Most of the Money
Sarah and her husband, who got married two years ago, had very little expenses. They were responsible and saved $20,000 of the money they were gifted for the future.
The Other Did Not
Jenny, on the other hand, has plans to go all out for her wedding.
She’s become a total bridezilla, asking anyone and everyone for cash to help pay for her extravagant plans. Talk about irresponsible!
Trying to Get Money From Other Family
Sarah’s parents refused to give more than the original $25k. Other family members have chipped in, but only to a maximum of $5k combined.
She Wants Her Sister’s Money
Unfortunately, Jenny knows that Sarah saved the $20k from their parents, and also knows that Sarah and her husband have a good amount of money saved up from their salaries.
She’s Asking Nonstop
Jenny has been pestering Sarah nonstop, demanding that she give her the $20k as a wedding gift or to help pay for other wedding-related events, like the bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, or honeymoon.
Arguing at Every Corner
She argues that Sarah could easily afford to gift her one of these things, especially since Sarah gifted their cousin a honeymoon vacation as a wedding gift last year.
She Wants Support for Her Big Day
While Sarah acknowledges she could easily pay for parts of Jenny’s wedding, she doesn’t want to financially support someone who didn’t support her on her big day.
On Her Sister’s Big Day, She Was Anything but Supportive
Jenny spent every family event after Sarah’s wedding gossiping about how her wedding was “trashy and cheap.”
Jenny expected more from Sarah and her husband. She said they are both financially well-off, and could have afforded a much nicer wedding. Talk about rude!
She Says She’s Not Helping Her Sister
Sarah has been honest with Jenny about her feelings, telling her she doesn’t want to help her after how she was treated following her own wedding.
Gossip Within the Family is Running Wild
Jenny has been telling family members that Sarah is selfish and immature for not helping her out.
But Sarah believes she shouldn’t have to help Jenny out when she didn’t receive support from Jenny on her big day.
Her Sister Made a Critical Mistake
To make matters worse, Jenny has already put down deposits on many services and vendors for her wedding plans, and just expected Sarah to help pay for it.
Her entitlement knows no bounds.
Matters Are Only Getting Worse
Now, she has no way to pay the vendors, and she can’t get her deposits back, either!
Sarah’s family members are trying to pressure her into bailing Jenny out, so she doesn’t lose the little money she already has.
Should She Give Her the Money?
But Sarah doesn’t see how this is her problem, and wonders if she is being mean by refusing to rescue Jenny from the consequences of her own actions.
She Doesn’t Owe Her a Thing
One Redditor wrote, “She got a sum of money for it, and if she can’t stay within that budget, NOBODY else needs to pay her a penny. You don’t owe her even five cents.”
Another commented, “Why do people plan events outside their budget and then expect others to make up the difference? $25k is a lot of money if spent wisely.”
What do you think? Should she give her sister the money as a wedding present or keep it for herself? Is she being petty for not helping?
