A grave mix-up has left a homeowner reeling as a company mistakenly demolished her cherished family home in southwest Atlanta.
The Incident
The incident unfolded while Susan Hodgson was away on vacation. Upon her return, she was confronted with a heartbreaking sight – her lifelong family property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“I am Furious”
As reported by the Associated Press, Hodgson’s shock and anger were palpable. She expressed her disbelief, saying, “I am furious. I keep waking up thinking, ‘Is this all a joke or something?’ I’m just in shock.”
Neighbor Steps In
The distressing situation began when a neighbor called Hodgson during her vacation, inquiring whether she had arranged for the demolition of the vacant house.
Owner Puzzled
Puzzled, she said no of course not, only to be informed that workers were actively tearing down her property.
Workers Confront Neighbor
The encounter took a distressing turn when the workers confronted the concerned neighbor, responding rudely.
Family Called In
A desperate Hodgson sent a family member to assess the unfolding chaos and to demand to see the demolition permit.
Demolished the “Wrong Address”
To her disbelief, the person in charge at the site, after reviewing his permit, admitted they had mistakenly targeted the wrong address.
No Reason for This
“This house has been boarded up for about 15 years. We’ve maintained it, keeping it boarded up, the grass cut, and the yard clean. Taxes are paid, and everything is in order,” Hodgson lamented, highlighting the absence of any reason for her family’s property to be demolished.
State of Limbo
Frustrated and hurt, Hodgson reported the incident to the police and sought legal advice. However, as of now, she remains in a state of limbo, uncertain of what steps to take next.
Trying Different Directions
“We’re still in this process of figuring out what to do,” Hodgson revealed. “We keep pressing in different directions to see if something is going to happen.”
Company Remains Silent
Adding to the emotional turmoil, Hodgson shared that the company responsible for the wrongful demolition, Atlanta-based “You Call It We Haul It,” has made no attempt to contact her.
Owner’s Astonishment
Hodgson expressed her astonishment at the situation, asking, “How do people just go up and tear somebody’s property down and then just drive off? How can they think that’s OK? I just wish he would come fix the problem that he caused.”
No Apologies Made
Hodgson continued, “It’s just hard to believe someone thinks they have the right to just come and tear something up and walk away from it and didn’t come back and say, ‘I’m sorry. What do I need to do to fix this? It was an accident.’ They didn’t give me nothing.”
Company Claim They’re Investigating
The company offered no immediate response to queries, but they did release a statement to WAGA-TV, indicating that they were conducting an investigation and working on rectifying the grave error.
