To be fair, OP’s folks had saved a little money for his education, and they gave those funds to him.
But they also told him he had to start paying rent right away.

Instead, OP found a job in the town where he was going to go to college and just moved out.

OP never looked back, working all through school while he got his degree.
He was busy and didn’t really have any good feelings toward his family at the time, so they hardly ever talked.

And things really haven’t gotten any better over the years, as OP hardly ever sees or talks to his parents even today.
