He Doesn’t Love His Wife Enough to Help Her Out After She Was Hospitalized

A woman took to Reddit recently to ask for opinions about asking her husband to work overtime to help pay the bills after she had surgery. This is her full story.

All through their marriage, OP’s husband has refused to work overtime, and he’s very protective of his time off.

He wants to do what he wants to do when he’s off the clock, and OP has always respected those wishes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, OP’s husband lost his job, which put a real strain on their finances.

OP picked up the slack by working 6-7 days a week to make sure their bills got paid until her husband found another job.

More recently, OP fell very ill and had to visit the emergency room.

She hoped they’d get her fixed up quickly so she could work her next shift, which was just a few hours away.

But It Was Much More Serious

Instead, OP’s health problems turned out to be more severe. She had to be hospitalized and underwent surgery the next day.

That kept her out of work for a couple of days and nixed a bonus that she was counting on.

But before she even went under the knife, OP’s husband told her she’d just have to work on her next two scheduled days to make up for the loss.

After the surgery, though, OP was in a lot of pain, and doctors did not clear her for work in time to clock in on those off days.

Her husband became angrier and angrier with each lost dollar!

When OP got home from the hospital, her husband asked her if she’d still be able to pay her share of the bills.

She told him that she’d probably fall short because of her lost income.

Then OP asked her husband if he could make up the difference by working on one of his off days. That set him off again!

He Said She Was Selfish

OP’s hubby told her it was selfish for her to expect him to work extra just to cover her half of the expenses.

He then suggested that she would have to sell some of her belongings if she couldn’t come up with the money to pay the bills.

That really stung OP, because she had covered her husband’s part of the bills during the pandemic and never griped about it.

She just worked extra days and hours and kept the family afloat while he was out of work.

OP never even hinted that her husband should sell any of his stuff to pay the bills. The thought never even crossed her mind!

Weren’t They Partners?

It hurt that OP’s husband refused to pitch in when he needed her the most. She knew marriage was supposed to be a 50/50 proposition.

But OP also thinks that sometimes, you just have to roll up your sleeves and pitch in a little extra, especially when your spouse is in need.
