OP taught himself Russian several years ago and then ended up living in Ukraine for a while.
He’s Completely Fluent
That gave him the chance to brush up on his language skills in a real-life setting.
Now, OP speaks pretty much flawless Russian.
He Found the Perfect Girl
Later on, when he was back home, OP started dating a Russian girl. She was bilingual, though, so there was never any need for him to speak in her native tongue.
He Had a Secret
And OP never even told his new girlfriend that he could speak Russian.
He Was Selfish
OP’s motivation for keeping his Russian skills a secret was a very selfish one.
He Was Going to Play Dumb
In particular, OP wanted to make his girlfriend think she could speak with her friends in Russian and that he’d have no idea what she was saying.
