It Was an Equal Partnership
OP and his fiancée had an agreement to split housework and bills equally, with some flexibility for help when needed.
They moved into the fiancée’s parents’ converted garage apartment to save money.
They Were Saving for the Future
With a low rent of $700 in total and pitching in for just part of the utilities, the young couple was set to save some serious money to get their own place. And for the wedding, of course..
She Was Sliding
Initially, OP’s fiancée stuck to the 50/50 arrangement for bills, but she started missing payments and falling back into a paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle.
OP had to remind her about her financial responsibilities on more than one occasion.
She Made More Than Him
Despite earning more than OP, the fiancée struggled to manage her finances.
She frequently failed to pay her portion of rent, utilities, groceries, and her car payment on time.
But He Carried the Load
OP had to cover the fiancée’s missing portion of rent after her parents confronted him, leading to ongoing arguments about finances between the couple.
The fiancée’s default response was suggesting they move if her parents continued to press them.
More Than His Fair Share
In addition to paying his own bills, OP did way more than his half of the housework, organized and paid for most dates and vacations, bought gifts for his fiancée, and footed most of the bills for their pets’ expenses.
She Didn’t Want Help
Concerned about the fiancée’s financial habits, OP suggested seeking the help of a financial coach.
But the fiancée boasted about being the breadwinner in social settings, emphasizing the stress of being the primary earner and paying all their bills.
She Bragged About Being the Breadwinner
At a recent get-together, the fiancée and her sister once again discussed her being the breadwinner.
When her sister mentioned her ex-boyfriend struggling with a higher-earning partner, the fiancée made a comment about OP not minding her bringing home the paycheck.
He’d Had Enough
Fed up with the fiancée’s behavior, OP confronted her about the disconnect between her earning more and not contributing her share
He Called Her Out
He told her that she wasn’t really the breadwinner if she wasn’t paying her bills and just spending all her money on herself.
No matter how much more she made than he did.
Her Gig Was Up
The fiancée felt embarrassed and claimed OP made her look bad in front of her sister and parents, who then wanted to scrutinize her spending.
It Was Over
In an update, OP revealed that he broke up with his fiancée after several revealing conversations.
It became clear to him that the fiancée had hidden significant financial issues from him.
She Was Going to Be Homeless
For starters, OP’s fiancée failed to disclose wage garnishment and considerable debt, which significantly impacted her take-home pay.
And her previous apartment faced non-renewal due to frequent late rent payments.
She Lied About Everything
She also misled her parents about contributing to OP’s expenses, telling them she was paying off his student loans, car, and other debts. None of that was true!
They Fought All Night
All of the lies were too much for OP to handle, and he didn’t feel he no longer felt he could trust his fiancée.
It all came to a head in that final argument about money that lasted all through the night.
He Took His Ring Back
In the end, OP took back his engagement ring and moved out. He’s taking some time to try and figure out his next move.
Redditor’s overwhelmingly support OP and don’t think he was off base calling out his fiancée in front of his family.
Many initially encouraged him to dig deeper and maybe even reconsider getting married.
That’s exactly what he did, eventually.
