These funds will serve to bolster law enforcement coverage, provide advanced training, and supply essential equipment along the state’s 58-mile border with Canada.
Patrol Hours Extended
Collaborating closely with local law enforcement, county, and state police, as well as Fish and Game authorities, the initiative seeks to increase patrol hours by an additional 10,000 in the region, extending this commitment until June 2025.
Terror Watch List Encounters
Governor Sununu revealed an alarming trend: encounters with individuals on the terrorist watch list at Land Border Ports of entry along the Northern border have doubled since 2017, while federal funding has dwindled.
Discrepancies Between Northern and Southern Borders
Compared to the Southern border, Sununu claimed the Northern border encounters criminals on the terror watch list far more.
Northern Border Encounters in Focus
Governor Sununu presented a striking statistic, revealing that 505 encounters with wanted criminals have occurred on both borders, and 429 have taken place in the northern border region.
Attorney General’s Lead Role in the Initiative
Attorney General John Formella assumes a pivotal role in directing this newly established alliance, providing support and guidance to state and local entities in their collective efforts.
Clarity on Law Enforcement Authority
Formella clarified the authority of state, local, and county law enforcement officers’ jobs would be situation-specific, possibly involving questioning or temporary detainment until Border Patrol intervention.
Thorough Training and Guidelines
Formella’s task force will be instrumental in offering training and clear guidelines to law enforcement officers, ensuring they are well-versed in their rights, limitations, and protocols in various scenarios.
Geographic Scope of the Alliance
The alliance’s jurisdiction extends to a 25-mile radius, encompassing 11 towns and unincorporated areas, with an emphasis on providing priority support to these regions.
Insights from a Police Chief
Rick Dube, the police chief for Pittsburg, is an advocate for the alliance and shared the challenges of apprehending suspects in the densely wooded northern border area, “they can be five feet away…and walk right by them. It’s a struggle out there. It’s not like the southern border where you can see a good distance to your right and left.”
Distinguishing the Northern Border Crisis
Governor Sununu described the often overlooked nature of the northern border crisis in national media, given the emphasis on issues at the southern border, “and understandably so. There are so many folks that are coming over. We have a massive crisis at the southern border,” he said.

Sununu stressed the importance of addressing this region’s rising activity and the lack of federal support, “Whether you are talking about fentanyl, the humanitarian crisis, whether you are talking about the lack of attention and resources that the federal government gives to the southern border, it is affecting all 50 states without a doubt.
