After a shocking case of family betrayal, the wife started to record her MiL’s conversations to prove that she was a liar. She then took to Reddit to see if she was in the wrong.
In Case of Emergency
In a bid to prepare for emergencies, a husband (27m) and his mother decided to open a joint account with a few thousand dollars.
Disaster Strikes
When the husband lost his job, him and his wife faced financial difficulties and asked the MiL for a small loan to cover their expenses until he found a new job.
A Helping Hand
Thankfully, the mother agreed to lend them the money, and they quickly repaid the loan with 5% interest.
An Unwanted Conversation
Trouble arose when the wife received a call from her father-in-law (the mother’s ex-husband) a couple of days later.
He accused them of “stealing her money” and taking advantage of the emergency account.
Feeling hurt and upset, the wife decided to show him the text messages exchanged between her husband and mother to prove their innocence.
A Family at War
Wanting to address the situation directly, the wife sent screenshots of the conversation to her mother-in-law, including her mother-in-law’s boyfriend in a group chat.
They expressed their anger with the story that had been shared and informed her that they would be closing the joint account during her upcoming visit.
Recorded Evidence
To avoid future misunderstandings, the wife began recording their conversations.
One particular recorded conversation stood out, where the MIL had bought a zoo membership for the couple’s children as a gift.
Two months later, she contacted them demanding repayment and claimed she needed the money urgently. The wife reminded her that a gift does not require repayment and shared the recorded conversation as evidence.
A Violation of Privacy?
This led to a strong reaction from the MIL, who accused the wife of violating her privacy and insisted on respect due to her age.
Now, the wife wonders if she was wrong for recording their conversations. She had hoped that recording would prevent misunderstandings and protect everyone involved.
It has further complicated the situation and strained the relationship with her mother-in-law.
Her MIL Is Untrustworthy

One user argued, “You started recording her because she has proven herself untrustworthy. Don’t accept any more gifts from her. Make it clear she is not authorised to buy anything on your behalf. She is upset because she was caught out.”
Others suggested she should end contact with the MIL altogether, “Just don’t take anything from her; close the account as planned, don’t discuss or argue, you now know that she is looking to create reasons to be hostile to you and ruin your reputation with relatives.”
