Among the mob of supporters involved in the events of 6th January were members of the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group known for its affiliation with Trump and its history of inciting violence.
The Capitol Riot
Dominic Pezzola, a recent recruit to the Proud Boys, found himself in the eye of the storm that day.
He Smashed the Capitol Window
He played a significant role in the chaos by smashing a Capitol window with a stolen police riot shield.
The Trial
Alongside four other Proud Boys, Pezzola stood trial in one of the most high-profile cases connected to the 6th January attack.
He Was Acquitted of One Charge
In a twist, Pezzola was the only one among the five Proud Boys to be acquitted of seditious conspiracy charges.
Multiple Counts
He was convicted on multiple counts, including assaulting, resisting, or impeding a police officer, robbery of government property, and destruction of government property.
A Lengthy Prison Sentence
These convictions carried severe penalties, including the potential for a lengthy prison sentence.
He Regrets His Actions
At his sentencing hearing, Dominic Pezzola made an emotional appeal for leniency.
He expressed deep remorse for his actions on 6th January. He referred to that day as “the worst, most regrettable decision in my life.”
His Acknowledgment
He said, “Your honor, I stand before you as a changed and humbled man,”
“But, nonetheless, as a man who has always taken responsibility for his actions … I have never denied what I did on J6,” he added.
The Unexpected Turn
However, as the judge delivered the verdict and left the courtroom, Pezzola’s demeanor turned suddenly and unexpectedly.
He raised his fist and shouted, “Trump won.”
Proud Boys Can Eat It
One user wrote, “Proud Boys can eat it. Glad to see some of those criminals going to jail. They’ve been hurting innocent people long enough.”
