Biden has continued the halted deportation of Venezuelans from the US, after a record-breaking month saw over 50,000 Venezuelan migrants enter the US.
Resumption of Deportation Flights
Deportation flights from the US to Venezuela have recommenced, marking a significant change after a four-year pause.
Restart After Suspension
These flights, which had been halted for several years, are now back in operation, carrying migrants from the US who have committed one of two crimes.
A flight took off from Harlingen, a city along the Texas border, with approximately 130 passengers on board.
These flights are transporting three main groups: recent arrivals, individuals with prior criminal offenses in the US, and those who entered the country without proper authorization.
Record Migration Numbers
The decision comes as the United States witnessed a record-breaking influx of around 50,000 Venezuelans crossing into the country in a single month.
Millions of Venezuelans Want Out
Since the crisis began in 2015, over 7 million Venezuelans are reported to have fled the country in search of greater economic chances.
To address the ongoing migration challenges, the White House has outlined plans for “multiple” deportation flights to Venezuela, with these operations occurring regularly.
Deportations to Venezuela are intricate due to the absence of diplomatic ties between the US and Venezuela’s authoritarian government.
The Circle of Sanctions
Prolonged US sanctions have deepened Venezuela’s crises, prompting more people to seek asylum within the United States as the economy continues to plummet.
A Path to Resolution
In an encouraging development, the Venezuelan government, led by President Nicolás Maduro, and the opposition have decided to initiate discussions on holding transparent and democratic elections.
Temporary Sanction Relief
The Biden administration has introduced a six-month suspension of specific sanctions, acknowledging the positive changes announced by Venezuela.
Support for Venezuelan Migrants
The US government recently offered rights to work for Venezuelans who arrived in the United States before July 31.
This measure allowed thousands of Venezuelans in the U.S. to work, reducing the burden on social services in cities with many Venezuelan arrivals.
Ongoing Political and Economic Challenges
Venezuela grapples with complex political and economic difficulties exacerbated by international pressures and ongoing sanctions.
