During a conversation at the University of Minnesota Law School with Robert Stein, the former chief operating officer of the American Bar Association, Barrett touched on various topics.

When asked about her role on the Supreme Court, Barrett candidly shared her views, stating, “It has its ups and downs…enjoying myself isn’t quite the right word that I would use. But it’s a privilege to serve, and I have no regrets about undertaking the service.”

The New York Times reported that Barrett also delved into her contemplations on past Supreme Court decisions and how she grappled with the profound implications they held, particularly on issues such as the death penalty and disability benefits.

She emphasized the need to maintain a balance between intellect and empathy when making decisions, stating, “It’s your head, not your heart that has to make the decisions, but you should never lose sight of the fact that your decisions affect real people, and you should never lose your heart.”
Ethics Would Be Nice
In response to calls for implementing an ethics code for Supreme Court justices, Barrett expressed her support for the idea.
She believes that establishing such a code would facilitate clearer communication with the public regarding the court’s actions.

“It would be a good idea for us to do it, particularly so that we can communicate to the public exactly what it is we are doing in a cleaner way,” Barrett stated.
She also reassured that all nine justices are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct in their roles.

The push for an ethics code in the Supreme Court gained momentum following reports that Justice Clarence Thomas had received various gifts from billionaire Harlan Crow, including travel on Crow’s private jet for vacations.
Furthermore, Justice Samuel Alito’s connections with hedge fund manager Paul Singer also raised concerns.

The organization MoveOn initiated a petition advocating for a “clear and enforceable code of ethics” within the Supreme Court.
The petition underlines the importance of investigating gifts received by justices, their sources, and their potential connections to court cases.

It also calls for inquiries into the justices’ failure to disclose these gifts or recuse themselves when necessary, and in some cases, even impeachment proceedings.

However, others seemed to support the Supreme Court Judge, with one post reading “People with no understanding of the law and driven by extreme partisanship get to take pot shots at someone who is significantly brighter and more accomplished than they are.”
